The Stables

Welcome to the Freshfields Stables

We are home to approximately 35 horses and ponies. These animals have come to us for any number of reasons, sometimes as a result or neglect or abuse, sometimes because the owner simply cannot afford or is not able to look after them any more. Through sheer hard work and determination we do the very best we can for every horse and pony in our care. Our dedicated team of staff and volunteers play a vital roll in the long term rehabilitation of these wonderful creatures. Our accomplishments would be far less without them. Each horse and pony is available on loan to the right new family...some are bonded pairs so must be rehomed together. Please feel free to contact us should you wish to view the horses, because you feel you have a suitable long term home on offer or because you would like to make a donation to the charity.

Many of the ponies at the shelter will remain here for life. The 5 "Bog Woppets" (a name our farrier calls our Shetlands) are too old to be moved and they are a happy contented little group. They consist of Noddy, Maggie, Connie, Grandad and Leroy.

Noddy has been in the care of freshfields since he was an eight years old stallion, he is now in his late thirties. He was born with malformed legs and had been sent as a foal to a dreaded horse market, he was rescued by someone and kept as a pet until his stallion behaviour became too difficult to deal with. After gelding he calmed down and is now everybopdys favourite.

Maggie was admitted after her field companion was killed by memebrs of the public feeding him cakes and bread. There was concern that Maggie could share the same fate so she was brought to the shelter.

Connie had lived at a wildlife sanctuary but they decided they could no longer keep her.

Grandad was rescued from a horse auction, as was Leroy who came from the Shetland Isles after his rescue. They would have undoubtedly been purchased by the meatman due to their age so they had a lucky escape.

The rescue could not continue without your generous contributions.

We look forward to hearing from you!
