CockerelsHere on the Freshfields' farm we are always over-run by more cockerels than we can handle. They are stunning birds and a pleasure to have around yet too many in one space can lead to problems. Anyone who has at least a couple of hens can have a cockerel (considering your neighbours are understanding) and they will make great companions for your hens. The requirements for keeping cockerels are the same as for the hens, they will need a good sized area to roam around in through the day time and a coup for night and in bad weather. Our cockerels are rehomed on the condition that they never enter the food chain and are not to be used to breed from. If you are considering taking on a cockerel of your own please bear in mind that they can make a lot of noise early in the morning so please speak to your neighbours about this first. For more information on adopting one of our cockerels please contact the rescue. |
